What would you do if you stumbled upon a treasure chest filled with diamonds, gems, and a huge amount of money? Most people would probably want to keep the treasure. This couple in New York did the exact opposite.
One day, husband and wife Matthew and Maria Colonna-Emanuel booked a landscaping company for their backyard. The two wanted to plant bamboo trees because they noticed that a deer had been munching on their plants.

“It was really prominent when the deer ate away all the foliage,” Matthew explained.
What supposed to be an ordinary day ended with a stunning surprise! As the landscapers were digging for pits for the plants, they accidentally dug up a rusty old box. At first, the couple thought that it was nothing out of the ordinary. However, upon closer inspection, they realized that it was actually a safe.
The workers then cracked the safe open. They were all surprise to see the contents of the box – over $50,000 worth of treasure in the form of bills and jewelry!
Matthew was stunned by the discovery and said, “And there are all these bags with hundreds and jewelry, diamonds, engagement rings, dozens of rings, gold with jade.”
That’s not all they found. They also recovered a piece of paper with an address written on it. The couple decided to look for the address and found out that it was their neighbors’.
Matthew then asked if they were robbed in the past.
“First I knocked on the door and I asked them if they were ever robbed and they said they were.”
According to ABC7, the police also confirmed the robbery that occurred in 2011.
With that, the couple did the unexpected. They returned the treasure.
“A couple of people asked us, ‘Why did you return it?’ It wasn’t even a question. It wasn’t ours.”
