There is no greater achievement for a child than to be able to finish his/her studies and attend his/her graduation.
Just like there is no greater honor for a parent than to see his/her child walk off that stage and accept the diploma certifying that the laborious years of hard work and dedication have finally paid off.
In the Philippines, this is doubly important. The majority of the population is still living below the poverty line and eagerly opportunities to rise above their station. Because of this quality of living, Filipinos rely on education to improve their lot in life.
Because of this desperation, Filipinos will rarely let anything get in between them and their children's graduation.
Students in Balas Elementary School, in Lamitan City, Basilan continued their graduation ceremonies despite having to endure being immersed in ankle-deep floodwaters.
Lamitan was experiencing hard rains and turbulent weather prior to the graduation, which caused the area to be flooded.
The school administration said that it was too late for them to change venue which is why they just pushed through with the graduation despite the health hazards that people exposed to dirty floodwater experienced.
While the parents were happy to see their children graduate, some could not help but question the actions of the school.
Some complained about the health risks that the children were forced into. They claimed that school should have looked for a better venue, knowing that the original venue was flood prone.
