SANTA FE, Argentina— Devout Catholics from all over the world mourned the death of a servant of God who recently perished from a terminal illness. Rev. Sister Cecilia Maria served the church for many years before she died of cancer at the age of 43. After her death, she became famously known as the “smiling nun” after her deathbed photos went viral online.

Though she suffered from cancer for months, her arduous battle did not take a toll on her appearance. Instead, Sister Cecilia died with a glowing smile etched on her face. Her death was announced on a Catholic Facebook page, where it immediately became an instant sensation hours after posting.

Below is an excerpt of the grave announcement:

“Jesus! Just two lines to let you know that our dearly beloved sister gently fell asleep in the Lord, after such a painful illness, always borne with joy and her surrender to her Divine Spouse.

We send you all our love, grateful for your support and prayer during this entire time, so painful yet so wonderful at the same time. We believe she flew directly to heaven, but we also ask you to not cease commending her to your prayers, so from heaven she may repay you. A big hug from her Sisters in Santa Fe.”

Unbeknownst to others, the smiling nun almost took a different path when she was a young woman. At the age of 26, Sister Cecilia finished her degree in nursing. However, instead of pursuing a medical field, she decided to serve the church instead. She took her first vows as a Carmelite nun later that same year.

Based from what we’ve gathered in a report from Catholic Say, the smiling nun has been serving in the Saints Teresa and Joseph Monastery in Santa Fe. Initially, Sister Cecilia was diagnosed with a cancer of the tongue. However, in just a span of months, the terminal illness made its way into other parts of her body and severely affected her lungs.
