Polygamy is the practice or custom of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. Some cultures from different countries around the world legalize polygamy but the majority find it an unusual and unacceptable practice; taboo. To be specific, polygamy is only legal in 58 out of 200 countries around the world, including Africa and in many Middle Eastern states. Here in the Philippines, the sanctity of marriage is a big deal since the country’s most common religion is Christianity. Even though the Philippines is exposed to a number of cultures, it still comes as a shock to Filipinos when they encounter something that is not common or ordinary.
A post of a proud uncle, Ronquillo Guiambangan went viral after he shared a couple of photos from his nephew’s wedding. Why did it capture so much attention you might ask? It’s just a wedding. Well, he has two brides, and he married them both on the same day and with the same ceremony. The post has been circulating the internet, with the subjects in the photo receiving thousands of comments from netizens all over the country. Most of them completely unaware of the culture, we suppose.
The two brides and the groom in the photo are obviously of the Islamic faith, and just for everybody’s information, Muslims sometimes practice polygamy. A man is allowed to have 2 or more wives, given he can fulfill his wives needs and provide a comfortable and happy life for them. Many netizens have expressed their opinions regarding the matter saying that the guy could’ve chosen a different religion where it didn’t include marrying two wives and some are pitying the women claiming they should know better. Fortunately, majority of the commenters gave nothing but support for the three, wishing them a happy life.
