Mother Heather Duckworth reminisces on blue carpet stain

Any mess would bring frustration to any mother. A crayon drawing of a six-legged dog on the wall; sn empty peanut butter jar used as a lotion; spilled milk on the on the floor and so on. 12 years ago, Heather Duckworth lost it over a blue ink stain she found on their carpet as she was putting four active boys to sleep. Her 4-year-old and 2-year-old triplets were supposed to be getting ready to go to bed. Standing nearby was Jacob, one of the triplets, holding a broken blue pen wearing his pajamas with a similar stain.

Heather took to Facebook to share her insights on the carpet incident with a post titled, “The Blue Stain.”

Below is an excerpt:

“I instantly felt so upset as I grabbed my son and took him to the bathroom to clean him up and my husband started scrubbing those bright blue stains on our carpet. Tears of frustration stung my eyes. I was just so tired. And mad. Like really, really angry. I wasn’t mad at my son – who was as blue as a Smurf – but upset with myself for leaving that pen out where my toddler could reach it,”

But in one life-changing moment, Heather’s frustration suddenly went away. Jacob was diagnosed with a disease that causes malformed cell growth. After two years of battling the disease, Jacob was gone.

This heart wrenching event changed the meaning of the blue ink stain Jacob left on the carpet. The stain serves as a constant reminder that there are far more important things to care about.

Heather Ducworth said, “It was still there . . . and now . . . it was a constant reminder of my son. It was a constant reminder of my frustration over something so trivial . . . something so unimportant in the scheme of life.” as she remembers her late son.
