Here’s what you can do to detect skin cancer early

Way back in 2012, more than 5.4 million Americans have reportedly been diagnosed with skin cancer. In fact, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. What is this disease and how can we prevent it?

This condition happens when cancerous cells form in the skin. It has various types, but the most common types are basal-cell skin cancer, squamous-cell skin cancer, and melanoma. Out of the three, melanoma is the most common and aggressive.

Are there ways to prevent it? There are several ways, but the easiest and by far the most common way is to detect it early. Experts advise to regularly check your skin for any suspicious spots or moles.

It won’t even take five minutes of your time, but this life-saving technique can potentially save you from skin cancer.

If you spot something unusual that does not go away for a month, then it’s time to pay a visit to your doctor. This way, you can detect and regulate the formation of melanoma. Melanoma is a tumor made up of melanin-forming cells which are often associated with skin cancer.

Although cancerous spots and skin growth can appear anywhere in your body, they are mostly found in the exposed areas of your body—such as arms, neck, and face. Based on a report published by Macmillan.org, cancer spots in the skin are usually painless and spurts at a slow pace.

Aside from this, you should also take note of the changes in size, color, texture, and shape of an existing spot in your skin. Cancercenter.com encouraged everyone to inspect the skin between your toes, palms, soles of the foot, nail beds, genitals, and even your eyes.
