Like any other expecting couple, Mike and Briony Curwood wanted nothing more than a smooth pregnancy and a successful delivery of their little bundle of joy. Just imagine the anxiety they experienced when doctors told them they would have to deliver a premature baby!
With all the possible complications a premature baby could suffer from, the couple were understandably nervous. Their excitement turned into worry, but according to doctors, they had no other choice if if they wanted to save the life of their unborn child.
So, what exactly happened with the couple and their premature baby?
The pregnancy actually started out very well. About 21 weeks into the pregnancy, the Curwoods got the very exciting news that they were expecting a baby girl! This bliss was soon replaced with an impending sense of dread.
This was because 30 weeks into her pregnancy, Briony could no longer feel anything in her womb. It made her heart pound alarmingly, and her motherly instincts knew that there was something terribly wrong.
The moment Briony sought advise from her physician, she was told she needed to deliver the baby on that day — or the very next morning at the latest.
“I didn’t know anything about prematurity as we always had 10-pound babies in my family. But then I realized it was way too early and I got really scared.”
Apparently, the premature baby, named by her parents Ava Grace, suffered from a very rare condition — she stopped growing in the womb! The only way she could continue growing was if she was delivered immediately and placed in an incubator.
This complicated turn of events led to the premature baby being born weighing a scant one pound as she entered the world.
Despite this being an extremely sensitive case, Baby Ava Grace proved to be a trooper! She fought with everything she could, and the family ended up going home after a few weeks.
Outside the womb, the premature baby developed gracefully and is now living as a healthy, normal child.
